Keeping Sharp as We Get OlderI have a small sign in my office that reads
In a cute way, it really touches one
of our greatest fears, that of losing our memory. Memory
loss generally announces itself gradually by little things,
like standing in front of the refrigerator trying to
remember what it was we wanted just a minute ago. Or trying
to remember the name of someone that we know we knew. Or,
where did I put my keys? We walk into a room and cannot
remember why we wanted to go there. We begin to realize that
these episodes are happening with more frequency than in
years past.
We can develop strategies that cover up the fact that we are not as sharp as we once were. We carry note pads along with us everywhere. We buy Palm Pilots for our schedules. We buy pillboxes to remind us of whether we have taken our pills for the day. All these things can happen normally at any age. It becomes a concern when they happen on a daily basis. What can we do to help? Are there strategies for keeping our memory sharp as we enter our upper years? I ask the 90-year-old patients in my office (those who look 60), what they do to stay young. I hear two consistent answers: "I exercise and I take vitamins, and have for years." Here is a lesson for us. Keep exercising--consistent, easy exercise keeps all the systems in your body working better. The answer to the vitamin question is evolving rapidly as we learn more about human physiology. I have recommended Purity Products The Perfect Multi and the Perfect Multi Super Greens as my first choice in a multivitamin. It is the best formula for the money that I have been able to find. Four capsules a day (2 for breakfast and 2 for dinner) will give you adequate amounts of all the important vitamins and supplements. However, there is little in it for memory. The Company now has another product called The Perfect Multi Focus, which has 10 extra ingredients aimed specifically at protecting the central nervous system, and extra B vitamins to enhance short term memory. I have always recommended getting the most ingredients in one package if possible. Let the manufacturer do the bulk buying so that you can buy it in one cost-effective package. Brain nutrients tend to be on the expensive side, making this strategy all the more important. It also lessens the number of pills taken daily, important for those who rebel against lots of pills daily, and for those likely to forget! Three for breakfast and two for dinner and you are done. For those of you advancing in years and beginning to sense that memory is not what it once was, the Perfect Multi Focus is a great choice for a single product. Jim McNabb, M.D.
