Our Nutritional Products DatabaseHome / Products / Herpes simplex Herpes simplexL-Lysine provides nutritional support to the immune system. It is an essential amino acid necessary for tissue repair, and the production of antibodies. Lysine is most commonly used to reduce the frequency of herpes outbreaks and decrease the severity and length of healing time. The recommended dose is 1 gram, three times a day. Probiotics have also been shown to support the treatment of herpes. Herpes zoster (Shingles)Because Shingles can occur in the nerves around the eye, I have seen many cases of this disease. I have seen the vision totally destroyed when the eye itself is affected. My professional practice has spanned from prior to the time of systemic antivirals to the present, and honestly, I have not been impressed that systemic antivirals are of much use. I would guess that eye doctors are evenly split over the question of using antivirals to treat shingles. Over the course of the last half dozen years, I have been treating shingles with high-dose vitamin C and been very impressed. The course of the disease seems shorter and the pain significantly lessened. Vitamin C can be used in very high dosages when there is an active infection. I recommend 2 grams of vitamin C every 2 hours until loose stools occur. Please record the total dosage at which this occurs, so that the following day, you can take just a little less. You will find that you will be able to take as much as 10 to 20 grams of C daily. For good measure, I recommend taking garlic (Allimax) three to four times daily. Garlic has mild antiviral properties without harming our normal GI bacteria.
